"The otherness of KAI's artworks makes us recognize the otherness in ourselves."
    – Marcel René Marburger

Steel, fire and the formidable beauty of the monstrous – KAI's art transports us into poetic machine worlds, into an avant-garde realm of kinetic metal sculptures. Since 1983, the multimedia artist has been breathing life into technology through creative action – KAI's metal art has become synonymous with a unique art movement.

The book KAI (Cologne: Edition_, 2023. German and English.) unveils a body of work spanning decades of metal sculpture and performance art, work that has shaped the spirit of Berlin’s authentic avant-garde and had a lasting impact on the city’s art and culture scene. It also highlights KAI's pivotal role as a protagonist in Berlin's independent art scene, from his role as co-founder of the Dead Chickens artist group, the independent cultural centre Haus Schwarzenberg and the artists’ club, Eschschloraque Rümschrümp, to his work with WERK.STATT.44 and Dead Chickens’ Monsterkabinett. As such, KAI's artistic practice is also representative of constantly evolving networks of artists and cultural producers.

The book offers insights not only into the history of KAI's work and influence, with a focus on the legendary Dead Chickens, but also into key locations and production studios that continue, to this day, to shape Berlin as an artistic and cultural capital.

Above all, the otherness in KAI's art creates unique realities, that lead us directly to our own inner being – raw and jagged, poetic and poignant. Like his work, the book presents a pulsating world of aesthetic extremes, inviting us to explore and experience his art on an aesthetically profound journey to ourselves.
